Free Virginia DMV Practice Test

Take a free, untimed Virginia DMV practice test in the real exam format: 40 questions, 24 correct to pass. Fresh random questions every attempt.

How this practice exam works

The Virginia exam is graded in two parts: 10 road-sign questions, of which you must answer all 10 correctly, and 30 rules-of-the-road questions, of which you need 24 (80%). Both parts must be passed.

More sample Virginia questions

As a general rule, when turning left at any intersection, who must you yield to?

Answer: Oncoming traffic going straight or turning right, and pedestrians

A left-turning driver must yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians before completing the turn.

Right-of-Way

You approach an intersection with a flashing red signal. What do you do?

Answer: Stop, then proceed when it's safe, just like a stop sign

A flashing red light means stop first, then yield and go when clear — treat it exactly like a stop sign.

Signals

How many demerit points does going up to 9 mph over the speed limit add to your record?

Answer: 3 points

Speeding up to 9 mph over the limit adds 3 demerit points.

Demerit Points

What does a white curb marking mean?

Answer: Stop only briefly to load or unload passengers

White curbs are for brief passenger loading/unloading only.

Parking Rules

Until what age must a child in Virginia ride in a rear-facing car seat?

Answer: Age 2, or until they exceed the seat's forward-facing weight minimum, whichever is later

Virginia requires rear-facing seating until age 2, or until the child outgrows that seat's manufacturer-specified forward-facing weight minimum, whichever comes later.

Child Passenger Safety

When two roads merge into one lane and neither driver has a stop or yield sign, who generally should yield?

Answer: The vehicle already in the lane has the right-of-way; the merging vehicle should yield

A merging driver should yield to traffic already established in the lane they are entering.

Right-of-Way

You face a red arrow signal for a turn lane. What must you do?

Answer: Come to a complete stop and wait for a green signal — you may not turn on a red arrow unless a sign specifically allows it

Unlike a plain red light, a red arrow generally prohibits turning even when clear, unless a sign says otherwise.

Signals

You're caught going 15 mph over the speed limit. How many demerit points is that?

Answer: 4 points

Going 10–19 mph over the limit adds 4 demerit points.

Full research notes, including what could not be confirmed

Virginia DMV official Driver's Manual (dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/exams/manual, sections dmv39a–h.pdf), DMV Publication 16 "Parents in the Driver's Seat" (dmv.virginia.gov, dated 07/01/2025), DMV's demerit-point schedule pages (dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/improvement/points), DMV's Driver License Eligibility Requirements page (dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/license/applying/eligibility), and the Virginia Department of Health's Child Passenger Safety — Virginia Laws page (vdh.virginia.gov/child-passenger-safety/virginia-laws, citing Code of Virginia §46.2-1095 and Chapter 10 Article 13) — content researched and verified 2026-08-19. EXAM FORMAT CORRECTED 2026-08-22: this note previously claimed "10/10 signs + 25 questions/80% rules" was "confirmed against the manual's testing section." The rules count was wrong. dmv.virginia.gov/licenses-ids/exams/know-exam states verbatim that part one is "10 road sign questions" of which "All ten questions must be answered correctly", and part two is "30 general knowledge questions" of which "You must correctly answer 24 questions to pass" — 40 questions total. ruleCount is now 30; ceil(30 x 0.8) = 24, matching DMV exactly. Treat the earlier "confirmed" wording as a caution: it asserted verification that had not actually been done against a page-level source. The adult (18+) 60-day permit-holding period is confirmed current, but note a scheduled change: effective January 1, 2027, drivers 18–20 will instead need 90 days AND completed driver education (both required); 21+ stays at 60 days or driver ed — revisit r68 after that date. Child passenger safety content (rear-facing/booster/seat-belt age thresholds, positioning, and penalties) was previously missing and has now been added and sourced. Re-verify periodically, as DMV manuals, fees, and thresholds change over time.
